Introduction: Cardiovascular risk represents a significant global public health concern, with an even greater impact in developing countries such as Angola.
Objective: To identify cardiovascular risk based on the triglyceride/HDL ratio and its relationship with dyslipidemia in patients treated at the Benguela Municipal Hospital, Angola.
Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 126 patients seen in general practitioner clinics from September to November 2024. A structured questionnaire with sociodemographic and lifestyle information was used for data collection. Participants underwent biochemical tests, blood pressure measurements, and abdominal circumference measurements.
Results: Of the 126 patients, aged 29.6 ± 13.9 years, 69% were female. Elevated cardiovascular risk was identified in 28.6%. Furthermore, 13.9% had hyperglycemia, 52.8% had low HDL-C levels, and 27.8% had hypertriglyceridemia. A significant association was observed between cardiovascular risk and the following variables: age, educational level, triglyceride concentration, and insulin resistance.
Conclusions: The study showed a high increase in cardiovascular risk in the population analyzed, primarily among young people with dyslipidemia and insulin resistance. This underscores the importance of promoting a healthy lifestyle in the community, with a special focus on young people, as habits established at this stage of life tend to persist and exert a lasting influence on health.
